Having a newborn baby is one of the most terrifying parts of being a parent. Especially as a new parent, you just never know anything about parenting no matter how many seminars you take. You learn as you go, yes?
For starters, no parent has ever stuck to one product when it comes to taking care of their child. There’s just no way a parent would! How many times did you switch baby soaps brands just to find the perfect one?
Your baby’s sensitivity when they are newborn to when they are infants isn’t just the same! And as a baby grows and develops, they start to adapt or resist changes which are where challenges arise.
Babies may not have sensitive skin when they are born. But three to four months in, they start to develop allergies and resistance to certain products because of immune growth. As a mother and a parent, it’s always best to be open to trying new things and products that could potentially help your baby’s health. If you’re feeling unsure about certain things regarding your baby, refer to your child’s paediatrician.
And in choosing the best option for your baby, you have the right to consider the effectiveness, sensitivity of the product to your baby, the cost and the economical side of choosing certain brands.
Just a disclaimer, this is a product review of baby soap brands that may or may not work for your kids, but it did its job working for my son. Now, why? Keep reading!
Will We Use These 5 Baby Soap Brands Again?
There are plenty of baby soaps to choose from, and for different purposes, too. These are the top 5 brands we’ve used that have helped my son with issues he had with newborn milia, milk rashes and dermatitis.
1. Cetaphil PRO AD Derma Skin Restoring – Wash
My son’s paediatrician recommended Cetaphil PRO AD Derma when he started having a really bad case of milk rash.
One morning, when my son was more or less one month old, we realised his newborn rashes weren’t newborn rashes at all. They were milk rashes because of the formula milk he was drinking. The paediatrician said it was just newborn milia, but it looks like it worsened because milk rashes started to appear all over his face. It was a clear sign of an allergic reaction to cow’s milk.
Four to five days into using the AD Derma variation, my son’s milk rashes started to decrease and soon fade, his baby skin was returning to normal.
Just something to note, the Cetaphil PRO AD Derma also dried up my baby’s skin and reduced the moisture from causing more milk rashes to appear, that’s why we had to use the Cetaphil PRO AD Derma – Moisturizer. It kept my son’s skin from losing moisture and it helped his skin to stay young and plump.
Will I use this again? I will use it again if the paediatrician says I need to, and if I think my son has rashes that aren’t dry and itchy. I feel like it has too many chemicals to dry my son’s milk rash so quickly, it shouldn’t be used regularly regardless of the climate.
It’s easier to find in local drug stores or pharmacies than supermarkets. If you want, you can order directly from the Cetaphil Singapore website here.
2. Johnson’s Cotton Touch Top-to-Toe Bath
After using the AD Derma by Cetaphil, we used this variation of the J&J line of baby soaps since paediatricians think this is one of the most affordable and mildest baby soap options. It was mild, my son’s rash never came back and the milia disappeared for good after a while. It really is mild.
In my honest opinion, the soap’s fragrance is awesome! My son smelled like he’d just taken a bath every time I carried him. The downside was when he’s sweaty from playtime and drying up the drool on his chin goes to his neck, the after-smell doesn’t really smell nice anymore.
So, I suggest, if you’re using this soap for your baby, it would probably be best to use it before bedtime. I would use this soap regularly if it was the rainy season, but I’ll have to pass if it’s the summertime.
You can also find this in local drug stores and pharmacies. You can also order it directly from their website here.
3. Cetaphil Baby Wash & Shampoo
This is a personal favourite, to be honest. My son is 10 months old, and he’s still using this. It’s really bubbly even with little drops, and it doesn’t over moisturise or dry my son’s skin at all. We use this regularly because it’s affordable, and it’s really working for us.
After using the Johnsons & Johnsons Cotton Touch baby soap, we started using this about five or six months ago because we liked what the Cetaphil PRO AD Derma did for our son. We decided to give Cetaphil another try and it works the best for us.
It also has a baby scent so you won’t have to worry about a thick smell like most liquid soaps for babies. If it helps to know, my son doesn’t get any unwanted odours even after sweating and drooling all over his chin and neck.
I recommend this if your baby has dry to sensitive skin since it’s a baby-friendly variation by Cetaphil. Again, you can find it on Cetaphil Singapore’s website here.
4. Lactacyd Baby Bath, Natural Cleansing And Protection
Lactacyd Baby Bath was my son’s first baby soap because his father liked the mild scent, he thought it was really attractive just like a baby’s natural scent. We used it for a while, but the paediatrician asked us to stop it because this was the time my son’s milk rash just started to get worse.
We used this for more than a month after I gave birth to my son. The reason we were allowed to use it is that like all the soap brands listed here, they’re super safe for newborns and infants, and they’re paraben-free and hypoallergenic. We had to stop using it because of the lactic acid that Lactacyd Baby Wash had, and my son was allergic to it, too – hence the milk rashes.
So, we weren’t even halfway through the bottle, we had to stop using it and switched to Cetaphil PRO AD Derma. My partner used it with his rashes from the kissing bug, and it helped him get rid of the itching and the spread of the allergic rash.
Nonetheless, Lactacyd Baby Wash is still a 10 out of 10 for me, and if we decided to leave Cetaphil, I think we’d be using Lactacyd Baby Wash for my son now. You can get a bottle of this at your local drug stores or supermarkets for this variant. I’m sure it will be there!
5. Mustela Gentle Cleansing Gel
This was a gift from someone, so it was a pleasure to use. It’s not like most baby liquid soaps because of the jelly texture. It was a nice body wash to use, but it would always have this after-bath effect like the soap hasn’t come off my son’s body, and he easily sweat. We stopped using it and gave it to a mum friend I have that was more than glad to have it.
I’m glad we didn’t get attached to it because it was a bit pricey, but it was a good experience to try it. I liked it because didn’t have a scent to it, and it is not stingy to the eyes.
If you think this is the baby soap for your child, you can find them on Agape Babies here.
In A Nutshell…
As parents, you will try many brands for your kids until you find the one that works for them. Some may serve their purpose, some may not. The best thing you can do is ask for recommendations from your childrens’ doctor and ask other parents what they also prefer. Surely, no parent would only prefer one or two baby soap brands.
Just a disclaimer, what may work for other kids may not work for yours and vice versa.
What’s one product that’s good for your child that you will always stand by?
