This year’s National Day is drastically different from what we are used to, due to COVID-19. But that does not mean that it should dampen our moods! 

There are still tons of activities you can participate in, shows to watch, and exhibits to explore. 

8 things you can do during Singapore National Day: 

1. National Day Parade

Date: August 9, 2020
Time: 10.20am to 2pm at the Padang; 3pm to 11.59pm at The Star Vista

The National Day Parade is and always will be one of the best occasions that every Singaporean looks forward to. With the COVID-19 outbreak, the parade will take on a different approach to give everyone a chance to enjoy. 

This year, NDP will be brought to every home in Singapore with its live broadcasts you can catch on TV and various internet platforms. Not only that, but there will be interactive features and activities to incite everyone’s participation throughout the event! 

You can also opt to participate in NDP in person! The parade will be held at The Star Performing Arts Centre at Star Vista and the Padang. As it is declared an “enhanced security special event,” expect to see tight security measures to be put in place. 

2. National Museum of Singapore

The National Museum of Singapore also went on a different route for this year’s National Day. With their online exhibitions and online performances, you can enjoy a memorable experience for this celebration!

3. Singapore Art Museum

Celebrate this year’s National Day with art!

Even at home, you can participate in the museum’s online programmes such as ‘Stay Home Shorts,’ which showcases four short films by local artists! Other activities include ‘Project 2020’ and ‘Little Red Dot’ wherein you can create illustrations or short films inspired by Singapore! The Kopi, Teh and Contemporary Art Online’ is also up to give you virtual tours around Singapore Art Museum’s collection.

4. Asian Civilisations Museum

The Asian Civilisations Museum has also prepared a wide array of online programmes for you to enjoy from the comforts of your home! You can take a virtual tour around the museum’s various exhibits and learn about Singapore’s many cultures.

5. National Gallery Singapore: Gallery Light Up

Venue: National Gallery Singapore

Take a stroll down the National Gallery Singapore and watch the gallery’s facade light up in the national colours of white and red. That’s not all! 

The gallery’s exterior will project 60 artworks by Singaporean artists that will rotate throughout the day. This is meant to show solidarity of local arts and cultural institutions in the midst of a global pandemic.

The gallery is also live online with a series of activities and programs that feature the defining moments of Singapore. The admission is free to all exhibitions for every visitor. 

6. National Day Fiesta at Singapore Sports Hub

With the theme “Onwards & Stronger Together,” the Singapore Sports Hub prepared a 55-minute show that will encourage its viewers to join in on the K-Pop Craze! 

In a time where everyone needs entertainment and fitness, this National Day Fiest brings to you a promise that will get you on your feet and have fun! Moreover, there will also be a #PlankThatSong challenge where participants are tasked to sing a National Day song while in a plank position. 

7. Gardens By The Bay National Day Concert

Gardens by the Bay, in collaboration with Mediacorp, will be bringing some of the best local talents in Singapore to commemorate not just Singapore National Day, but also the country’s strength in battling the COVID-19 outbreak.

8. National Day Sing-Along

For the first time, this year’s National Day Sing-Along will be held online for everyone to come together in celebration of the country’s independence! Important figures such as President Halimah Yacob will be present as a Special Guest in the event as she will deliver a message to the entire nation. Everyone is invited to sing their hearts out together as no physical distance can stop us from celebrating!
